(SANDUSKY) — Work officially got underway last week on the Elk Street Streetscape project along M-19 in Sandusky. Crews have started breaking up pavement and brick along the 30-year old boardwalk and sidewalk area at the corner of South Elk (M-19) and M-46 with little to no traffic delays. McKerchie Enterprises, Inc. of Clio was awarded the project bid at $361,622. The project will include repaving the raised concrete boardwalk and having a railing installed instead of a brick wall, which was torn down the summer of 2014. New stairs will be added at the north end of the boardwalk with a handicap ramp at the south end. Concrete bump-outs are also planned providing more space. Construction is expected to be wrapped up by mid-June, in hopes of having everything done by the Thumb Festival.
