(AREA) — Governor Rick Snyder has signed legislation introduced by 81st District State Representative Dan Lauwers allowing agricultural drivers to renew their commercial driver’s licenses at the start of the planting season instead of waiting until it expires. House Bill 4577, now Public Act 58 of 2016, takes immediate effect, which means drivers can now renew once a calendar year. Lauwers of Brockway Township says reforms such as this are necessary to keep Michigan’s economy strong. The lawmaker noted that agriculture is the second largest industry in the state behind the auto industry and employs nearly a million people. He adds that making sure that all the facets of the farm industry are in sync is an important aspect of keeping Michigan’s economy on the upswing.
