(AREA) — Earlier this month the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development announced that grants totaling $135,000 would be distributed to 23 animal shelters in the state. There was a clerical error in the report and locally, the Sanilac County Animal Control Shelter actually received $1,925, not $175 as previously reported. The funds are given out through the department’s Animal Industry Division and was donated by state taxpayers using a check-off option. Since 2010, the Animal Welfare Fund has distributed more than $967,000. This year there were 68 applications totaling over $580,000 in requests. The funds seek to increase the number of adoptions through spay and neuter programs; improve staff knowledge of proper animal care through educational programs and training; and assist shelters with unreimbursed costs of care for animals housed for legal investigations. The state says notable projects include a public education campaign on pet care, as well as a variety of in-school programs.
