Comments reopening on proposed use of pipelines under rivers

(MARYSVILLE) — Two members of Congress say the government is reopening the public comment period on the proposed use of existing pipelines under the St. Clair and Detroit rivers. U.S. Representatives Debbie Dingell and Candice Miller said Friday that the Department of State agreed to reopen the comment period for an additional 30 days. A 30-day public comment period expired last month with little feedback. The department issued two permits in 2014 to Houston-based Plains LPG based on it acquiring six pipelines beneath the St. Clair River and another under the Detroit River. In a letter to the congresswomen, the department said it’s revisiting the company’s permit application and considering whether to give a new permit for two St. Clair pipelines built in 1918 authorizing transporting crude oil and other liquid hydrocarbons.
