(LAPEER COUNTY) — The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents of a scam that involves and individual impersonating a sheriff’s deputy. The caller advises the unsuspecting resident that there is a valid warrant out for their arrest and is attempting to collect bond money. The impersonator requests that the individual pays with a pre-paid debit card. Officials say that over the past week, neighboring counties have experienced the same fraudulent activity. A man with a southern accent is on the recording stating you have reached the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office. The recording also states if this is an emergency please hang-up and call 911 to make it appear more believable. The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Department warns people that this is a fraudulent scam and to not send any money through pre-paid debit cards or any other means. The department does not collect bonds with pre-paid debit cards; only in person. Anyone contacted by a caller claiming to be law enforcement regarding an arrest warrant, please visit the nearest local police agency.
