Detroit-area sheriff’s departments getting armored vehicles

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) – Two suburban Detroit sheriff’s departments are expected to get new armored vehicles after ones they used were returned to the federal government. The Oakland Press of Pontiac reports sheriff’s offices in Oakland and Macomb counties could be receiving the vehicles soon. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard says his office applied to get a new one, which has wheels, after it had to return the old one, which had tracks like a tank. U.S. Rep. Candice Miller of Michigan says Macomb County also is getting a new vehicle. The vehicles previously used by the departments were recalled under an executive order issued by President Barack Obama. He ended long-running federal transfers of some combat-style gear to local law enforcement in an attempt to ease tensions between police and minority communities.
