Township clerk resigns after clerical error leads to fines

(RILEY TOWNSHIP) — A township clerk in St. Clair County has stepped down after a clerical error resulted in the community being fined about $1,700 last year. Riley Township Clerk Sue Chmielewski resigned Tuesday. She says in a letter to the township’s board that she didn’t want to leave her position, but felt “it is in the best interest for Riley Township.” She didn’t attend a Tuesday meeting where her replacement was appointed by the board. In November, Chmielewski said she was responsible for the fines after she incorrectly reported the number of local people collecting unemployment to the state. The state Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs requires online reporting, but the former clerk said she’d mailed in data.
