Classes canceled after suspected meningitis death of Saginaw student

SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) – Classes are canceled for the day at a Saginaw school after a fourth-grade student died of suspected meningitis.
Students at Arthur Eddy Academy won’t report to school Monday.

The Saginaw County Health Department notified the principal Friday of a suspected case of meningitis involving a student at the school. Superintendent Nathaniel B. McClain says families of students at the school were notified the same day.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. Health officials informed the principal that the student died Saturday.

McClain says they’ve “taken steps over the weekend to ensure that all classrooms and common areas in the school are appropriately sanitized.”

Classes are scheduled to resume Tuesday, when counselors will be on hand.
