Sheriff warns of Business Western Union Scam

scam

(AREA) — Sanilac County businesses are being warned of a Western Union Scam that was brought to the attention of the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Department this week. Sheriff Garry Biniecki says a woman contacted the local business on Thursday and told the employee that she needed to run a diagnostic evaluation on the business’s equipment. The caller then instructed the employee to punch in a series of numbers into the system approximately three times. The series of numbers were determined to be credit card numbers. Western Union was contacted and was able to stop part of the fraudulent transactions. Businesses are urged to use caution when receiving calls from individuals requesting them to perform any type of diagnostics to their credit card machines and/or business computers. Businesses that are contacted by a suspicious person or experience similar calls are asked to contact their local police department or the sheriff’s office.
