North Huron FFA Agricultural Issues Team Receives Silver Award, Semifinalist in National Contest

(HURON COUNTY) — The North Huron FFA Agricultural Issues team recently took a Silver Award at the National FFA Convention and Expo in Louisville, Kentucky and made it to the semifinals. The team, coached by FFA Advisor and Ag teacher Joe Ankley, has competed in a district, regional, and state event earlier this year to be the lone representative at the National event from Michigan. Team members Raymond Heins, Brandon Stein, Tyler Gorkowski, Breezy Fischer, Raegan Gembarski and Meghan Goretski, presented the pros and cons of wind energy development in Huron County and the Thumb. The National FFA Agricultural Issues Forum CDE is a competitive event that tests students’ knowledge of agricultural issues and evaluates how well they can apply classroom knowledge to real-life situations. The North Huron team researched wind energy in the thumb area by visiting with several wind energy companies with existing and developing wind parks and also groups opposed to wind development projects. They created a 15 minute presentation that addressed the major benefits and risks of continued wind energy development.
