Deputies investigate horse and buggy vs. car crash late Thursday

(GREENLEAF TOWNSHIP) — Sanilac County Sheriff’s deputies were sent to the scene of a car-buggy accident Thursday night around 10 p.m. at the intersection of Bay City-Forestville Road and Germania Road in Greenleaf Township. According to deputies, a horse and buggy, driven by 21-year-old Mose Kempf of Bad Axe, was heading north on Germania Road and attempted to turn west onto Bay City-Forestville Road. Kempf then pulled into the path of a car traveling east on Bay City-Forestville Road driven by 21-year-old Elizabeth Bowerman of Ubly. Kempf told deputies that he had misjudged the distance of the oncoming car. As a result of the crash, the horse was injured and became loose from the buggy. Kempf and local citizens were able to secure the horse until a trailer arrived to take it to Bad Axe for treatment. Both Kempf and Bowerman sought their own treatment for minor injuries at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe after the accident.
