House approves Representative Lauwers bill aiding agricultural drivers

(AREA) — The Michigan House has approved legislation introduced by State Representative Dan Lauwers enabling agricultural drivers to renew their seasonal commercial driver’s licenses at the start of the planting season. Lauwers says the legislation is common-sense reform to ensure drivers have some flexibility in obtaining the needed CDL documents when the new planting season starts. According to Lauwers, under current law, a seasonal CDL cannot be renewed until 12 months plus one day has passed. The Brockway Township Republican says that because the agriculture industry is one of the major drivers in Michigan’s economic comeback, we should remove any barriers that prevent people from going to work. The measure now goes to the Senate for consideration.
